SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Singapore’s transport minister has been arrested in connection with a rare high-profile corruption investigation that took the billionaire hotel mogul out, the Singapore Craft Control Authority said.
Minister of Transport S Eswaran Confirming the arrest for the first time, the Corrupt Practices Investigations Bureau (CPIB) said in an emailed statement late Friday. Eswaran Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was ordered to go on leave earlier in the week after the Bureau of Civilian Protection said the minister was “currently assisting” with an ongoing investigation.
Pole Hotel Ong Bing Seng, one of Singapore’s richest people, was also arrested on the same day and released on bail in connection with the investigation. Ong is the Managing Director of Hotel Properties Limited, which owns a chain of upscale hotels and resorts in locations around Asia Pacific.
Ong, a Malaysian permanent resident of Singapore, is credited with helping bring Formula 1 Grand Prix racing to Singapore in 2008. His own company Singapore GP and Singapore Tourism Board Last year it renewed its contract to host the F1 race until 2028.
