Heavy rains and floods continue to wreak havoc in Himachal Pradesh with 17 deaths reported in the last 24 hours in Mandi and Shimla districts in rain-related accidents and road accidents due to waterlogging.
IMD has issued an orange alert for the state from July 15 to 17, and very heavy rains are expected in the next 72 hours in Himachal, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, flood waters began to recede in Punjab and Haryana even as relief work continued in flood-hit areas of the two states on Saturday.
Widespread rains with thunderstorms are also expected over Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Inner Karnataka and Kerala.
Uttar Pradesh and Bihar
The International Institute for Human Development said active monsoon conditions are likely to prevail in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with heavy rains forecast for the next four days and lessening thereafter. An orange alert has also been issued for both states.
In Bihar, at least 22 people were killed by lightning strikes in different parts of the state in the last 12 hours.
Maharashtra
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rains over the next five days in Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindurg and Doli.
According to the notice issued by the Regional Center of Meteorology, Mumbai, heavy rains are expected in isolated places in Mumbai during the next five days, while very heavy rains are also expected in isolated places in Raigad and Ratnagiri.
Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh
IMD said heavy rains are expected in Himachal and Uttarakhand in the next 72 hours.
“This weather pattern is expected to continue over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, with isolated heavy rains likely over Uttar Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan over the next four days. On July 17, Uttarakhand may experience isolated heavy rains.”
Meanwhile, in Himachal, the IMD has issued a yellow alert in many isolated districts till 18 July.
Punjab and Haryana
Floodwaters are beginning to recede from several places in Punjab and Haryana, which were hit by heavy rains earlier this week, even as relief work continued in flood-hit areas of the two states on Saturday.
Two breaches occurred along the Gajar river in Punjab’s Mansa district on Saturday, after which several villages bordering Haryana stared at the threat of flooding.
Northeast India
The Indian Meteorological Department on July 15 informed that heavy rains are likely over West Bengal and Jharkhand in the next two days.
Rain activity will continue over northeastern India as well. In the Himalayas, a heavy rain warning has been issued until July 18, Odisha from July 17-20 and a warning has been issued for Jharkhand which is likely to receive heavy rain until July 20.
IMD said heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh.
Central India
Heavy rains are expected in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
An orange warning of heavy rain has been issued in 19 districts of Madhya Pradesh. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rain warnings have been issued in Gwalior Chambal district including Narsinghpur, Agar, Shajapur, Jhabwa, Haridwar, Ratlam, Diwas, Damoh, Seoni, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Raisen, Vidisha, Betul and Chindwara.
