India’s women landed a 40-wicket haul for Bangladesh (via the DLS method) in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday. Bangladesh wrote history with the win, recording their first victory over the Women in Blue in the ODI format.

India bowled first in the match and did well to restrict the hosts to 152 in a match that was reduced to 44 overs per side due to rain. Amanjot Kaur made an excellent ODI debut, scoring figures of 4/31 from nine overs, which also included maidens. Devika Vaidya chipped too with 2/36. For Bangladesh, captain Nigar Sultana scored 39 off 64 balls.

However, India’s Fighters fell short again as they were bowled out for a disappointing 113 from 35.5. Deepti Sharma (20) was the only batsman to touch the mark of 20. For Bangladesh, Marouf Aktar shone with 29/4, while Rabih Khan made 3/30.

As India aim to balance the series in the second ODI, which takes place in Dhaka on July 19, we look at three changes the visitors can consider for the must-win encounter.

#1 Shafali Verma For Priya Bunya

Opener Shafali Verma was not selected in the playing eleven for the first ODI against Bangladesh after a long run of poor form. Since her unbeaten 76* in the 2023 Women’s Premier League match in March, she has taken a highest score of 33 from eight innings. She was sent off without scoring two goals.

Chafali played three batsmen during the running tour of Bangladesh and scored scores of 0, 19 and 11. It was no surprise that she was left out of the squad for the opening ODI against Bangladesh. One could see it coming.

Her replacement as opener, Priya Bunia, also struggled to make an impact in the first ODI. She scored 10 of 27 points and was one of Maarouf’s four victims. Of course, given the number of chances Chavalley was given to prove his worth, it would be unfair to part with Bonia after just one failure.

With this series online, the Indian think tank may come back to Shafali and just hope and pray that she delivers the goods.

#2 Harleen Deol by Jemimah Rodrigues

Jemima Rodrigues extremely talented. But she tends to shed a dimple after an impressive series of scores. And when that happens, its barren expanse stretches beyond what the team can handle. India finds itself in a similar situation with respect to Jamima again.

In her last eight rounds, she posted a highest score of 32, which came during the WPL in March this year. During this phase, she was dismissed for individual scores on four occasions. In four innings of the running tour in Bangladesh, she scored 11, 8, 28 and 10 – figures she certainly won’t be happy with.

India could be tempted to give Harleen Deol a chance in the second ODI against Bangladesh. Harleen (25) has played seven ODIs and 24 T20Is, scoring 104 and 251 runs respectively. She can shoot the ball as well and is a very good player.

#3 Anjali Sarvani for Pooja Vastrakar

Pooja Vastrakar’s right-arm tackle has not proven very effective in this series against Bangladesh so far. The tour started well with figures of 1/16 from four overs as India edged out the hosts by seven wickets in the first T20I of the series.

Vastrakar smothered the Bangladeshi batsman, who went on for 114/5. India easily chased down the target thanks to a half-century from captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

Vastrakar bowled just once in the second T20I, conceding 10 runs, and not falling in the third match of the series. The 23-year-old couldn’t make much of an impact in the first day either, hitting figures of 0/37 from nine overs.

Left pacer Anjali Sarvani could be considered as a replacement in India’s playing XI in the second ODI. She has so far represented the country in six ODI matches, claiming three batsmen.
