A senior advocate alleged that MP Abhishek Banerjee had made disparaging remarks about the judiciary and had taken to the Calcutta High Court asking on his own initiative of his comments and to initiate contempt proceedings against him.

Claiming that Trinamool Congressman Abhishek Banerjee had made insulting remarks about the judiciary, a senior advocate on Monday took to the Kolkata High Court demanding knowledge on his own of his comments and initiating contempt proceedings against him.

Senior Advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya was asked by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam to state the case before a three-judge hearing in sudden contempt over the alleged closure of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha’s courtroom from outside, and pasted insulting posters outside his residence in South Kolkata.

“A certain person has gone on record claiming that the Supreme Court provides protection for social dissidents,” Bhattacharya said, and confirmed that Banerjee blamed a section of the judiciary for the deaths during the state’s panchayat polling process.

Claiming that the alleged remarks on the judiciary had a serious impact on the Majesty of the Tribunal, Bhattacharya called orally before the bench presided over by the Chief Justice to obtain knowledge on his own of the comments of the National Secretary-General of the Transitional Military Council.

Bhattacharya, who is also a member of the CPI(M) Rajya Sabha, prayed that the two issues — alleged contempt of Justice Mantha’s court and Banerjee’s alleged comments, be heard together by the larger three-judge bench.

The presiding judge said the larger session would sit later this week depending on the time available to the other two judges and the matter could be mentioned before him. The Grand Council consists of the chief justice and two justices I.P. Mukerji and Cheetah Ranjan Dash.
