Foxconn, a major iPhone assembly company for Apple, has proposed to build an additional Rs 8,800 crore plant for that unit in the Devanahalli Information Technology Investment Zone (ITIR) in Karnataka, the state’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.P. Patel said on Monday.
He said that Prime Minister Siddaramaiah presided over a high-level meeting with delegates from Foxconn Industrial Internet (Fii), chaired by its CEO, Brand Cheng, in this regard.
As per the proposal, Fii, a subsidiary of Foxconn (formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd), has a plan to invest Rs 8,800 crore. “This will create 14,000 jobs,” said Patel. “The land area required for the project is about 100 acres.”
Fii delegates will be taken to Tumakuru to inspect available land in Japan Industrial Township near the headquarters city.
Information Technology Minister Priyank Karg and Principal Secretary Vandita Sharma also attended the meeting.
Fii will be involved in manufacturing screens and outer covers apart from making the mechanical components needed for the phones. This will serve as a complementary plant to Devanahali (ITIR) ‘Final Assembly’ unit,” the minister said in a statement.
“The state is ready to provide full support, by offering the land needed to set up the manufacturing unit, on 100 acres of land available in the Japan Industrial Park near (prefectural headquarters city) Tomakuro,” Patel said in a tweet.
Patel said on Thursday that the land handover to supplier Apple Inc and Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn, for Devanahalli ITIR’s mobile device manufacturing unit is in the “final stages”. “Foxconn is going to float in about 300 acres. The land handover process is in its final stages, and there were some issues, so I personally held meetings four times in this regard. We didn’t want to lose the project. Foxconn, which makes Apple phones, is very prestigious for us. said the minister.
“Foxconn will invest US$1 billion i.e. Rs 8,400 crore and create 50,000 jobs in the first phase (in Devanahalli ITIR),” said Patel.
