Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) specialist Gary Tonon has drawn on his extensive wrestling experience to shape his latest foray.

The Lion Killer takes a second round winner over Russia’s Shamil Jasanov via knee bar in a featherweight MMA match at ONE Fight Night 12 on Prime Video on July 14 in Bangkok.

The 31-year-old American BJJ picked things up in the second round of the competition with a series of propelling kicks early on to force Shamil Gasanov to move and shoot for a takedown. The 27-year-old Dagestani fighter was in extreme control at first, but eventually saw Gary Tonon find his way again.

Then while clinching into the corner, Gary Tonon moved down for a leg lock. He grabbed his opponent’s leg and, squeezing it, sent Shamil Gasanov to a cry. “The Cobra” tried to escape but was unable to, eventually having to walk out once the second round reached the halfway point.

During the ringside interview after his victory, the New Jersey native said he strategically used his crushing mechanics to help him achieve victory, saying:

“That’s why he had to tap because he was in the same position the whole time. I could only get that submission after applying the over-the-foot fracture mechanics.”

The win was Garry Tonon’s second in a row, propelling him to another shot at the world featherweight title.

He had his first shot at the gold medal in March last year but lost by a knockout in the opening round to then world champion Than Lee.

ONE Fight Night 12 reboot is available for free to Prime Video subscribers in North America.
