Maira Bueno Silva equaled Ronda Rousey’s record in a main event match against Holly Holm in the main event at UFC Vegas 77 on Saturday. While No. 3 seed Holm looked to make another case for a title lead, Chitara went on the hunt to establish herself as a legitimate contender for the now vacant title.
Silva started slow and steady, reading Holm’s stick and-move while trying to control the center of the octagon in the opening frame. The 31-year-old Brazilian stunned her opponent early in the second round with a clean right, resulting in a desperate clinch. When the 41-year-old Holm attempted a level drop, Silva caught her in a modified standing guillotine to earn a quick tap.
It was the third straight win by Mayra Bueno Silva, who also tied Ronda Rousey’s record for the most commands in the division’s history. Although Rousey hasn’t fought since 2015, the UFC women’s bantamweight champion has had 3 wins up until Shitara.
Ronda Rousey began her career with an impressive twelve-fight winning streak, which mostly involved tape submissions before Holly Holm derailed the hype train. After suffering a subsequent TKO loss against Amanda Nunes, ‘Rowdy’ left the UFC to trade her to WWE.
While there have recently been rumors about Ronda Rousey returning to the UFC, Ariel Helwani has shut it down, claiming she has no such plans. However, Rousey recently stated that her dream opponent could make her return to the octagon.
‘Rowdy’ paid her respects to former Mandalorian star Gina Carano, crediting her with paving the way in women’s MMA. said the 36-year-old recently us weekly:
“My dream opponent would be Gina Carano. She’s a pioneer in women’s mixed martial arts, and I can’t think of a better way to say thank you than to yell her a**.”
Although Rossi and Carano were apparently on a collision course at one point, the confrontation never came to fruition. Fans can only hope that Carano will consider his MMA return and bring Rossi back into the octagon for a massive bout.
