Three candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party, including External Affairs Minister Sabrinam JaishankarOn Monday, he announced his “undisputed” election to the Rajya Sabha of Gujarat, officials said.
Apart from Jaishankar, the other BJP candidates elected to the upper house for a 6-year term are Kesredivsen Gala and Babubhai Desai.
For the career diplomat turned politician, who was appointed to the Union Cabinet in 2019, this will be the second term in the Rajya Sabha from the BJP-ruled country.
Returning officer Rita Mehta said the three candidates had been declared “uncontested” elected.
Kesridevsinh Digvijaysinh Jhala, Desai Babubhai Jesangbhai and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar Krishnaswami “have been declared uncontested on July 17,” the regional office said in an announcement on the national eVidhan app website.
Monday (July 17) was the last date for nomination forms to be withdrawn and, if necessary, a ballot was to be held On July 24th.
The opposition Congress party announced that it would not field candidates for the elections on the three Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat because it did not have enough MLAs in the 182-member assembly.
Jaishankar submitted his nomination form on 10 July, while Gala and Desai submitted their papers on 12 July.
Two members of the lower house of the Raya Sabha from Gujarat, Yogalji Thakur and Dinesh Anavadia – whose terms were due to expire soon – were not re-nominated by the BJP which instead sent Gala and Desai this time.
The Saffron Party won a record 156 seats in the House of Representatives elections held late last year, while the Congress witnessed its worst performance since the formation of the state by obtaining only 17 seats.
