Punjab Congress President Amrinder Singh Raja Waring demanded a high-level investigation on Sunday into the incident of heated clash between Kannarias (a group of pilgrims carrying holy water of Ganga from Haridwar) and Muga police.

The quarrel between Kawadias and MogaPolice is deeply condemned and unacceptable. INCPunjab is calling for a high-level investigation into the incident on Twitter @Warring.

A clash ensued between Kanwarias and Muga police on Friday and Saturday night after a policeman ran his car over a group of Kanwarias, seriously injuring at least four of them. The accident happened on Charik Road when Kanwari was walking towards Bagapurana.

After at least four of them were seriously injured, the angry conures allegedly became violent, dragging the policeman from his car, ripping his clothes and beating him.
Mercilessly.

The policeman identified as Punjab Home Guard (PHG) Jaskaran Singh, who was posted to Kot Isi Khan Police Station, was seriously injured as the Kanwars allegedly continued to beat and assault him. After reaching the place, the Muga police released the policeman from captivity and made him sit in their car, but the Canarias quickly opened the attack on him again and pulled him out of the police car.

With the situation spiraling out of control, the police resorted to using light hoses on the canoes and also opened fire, hospitalizing the injured. The police also detained some kanwar from the site and later released them.

However, the police and the kanwaris on Saturday reached a compromise after Moga MLA Dr Amandeep Kaur Arora of the AAP intervened and confirmed that the injured kanwaris would get free treatment at a government facility. The situation turned tense on Saturday after several Hindu organizations arrived at the SSP office but were mollified by local AAP leaders.

The police said that after the policeman crashed his vehicle into the kanwar, instead of reporting it to the police, they resorted to violence and began to brutally beat the policeman. Police said the policeman was tied up and then assaulted. Only after the PCR informed the top officials that policemen from three police stations rushed to the site to bring the situation under control. Even when they managed to free the policeman from captivity, they again allegedly opened an attack and pulled him out of the police car after which the police resorted to using light machetes and also opened fire in the air.

Moga SSP J Elanchezhian said that the policeman and four Knoriyat are undergoing treatment. “The FIR is not registered as a mutual compromise was reached according to the SSP.
