Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chano posted an emotional plea on social media to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to restore peace to her troubled home of Manipur.

Protect all the people of Manipur, and bring peace as before “Please save all the people of Manipur and restore peace in the state,” Mirabai said in a video she posted on her Instagram account on Monday evening.

Three months have passed since the violence began in Manipur. The authorities have not yet restored peace. Because of the violence, many athletes are unable to train and students are unable to focus on studies. Many people died and many homes were burned down. Although I am training in the USA for the upcoming World Weightlifting Championships and the Hangzhou Asian Games, I have a home in Manipur. Even if I’m not in the state, I think back home and wonder when normal life will return. I appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to find a solution to the unrest as soon as possible.”

Manipur has witnessed widespread violence since the beginning of May this year, prompting many medal-winning athletes from the state to vow to return their medals if peace is not restored soon. This included athletes such as former Indian football captain Owinam Bimbim Devi, weightlifter Kungarani Devi, boxers Sarita Devi and Ipumsha Singh, and judoka Shoshila Devi Lekmapam. These athletes had presented a memorandum to Home Minister Amit Shah, who was on a visit to Manipur, and demanded immediate restoration of peace in the state.

Former Rajya Sabha MP and Olympic bronze medalist Mary Kom also issued a video appeal to the Prime Minister to help stop the violence.
