Jain monk Acharya Shri Kamakumara Nandi Maharaj was found murdered in Pelagavi district earlier this month. The butchered body parts were found in a well in the Chikodi taluk of the district

Dozens of Jain community members on Monday staged a protest in Jantar Mantar here against the killing of a monk in Karnataka, demanding an investigation by CBI into the incident.

Jain monk Acharya Shri Kamakumara Nandi Maharaj was found murdered in Pelagavi district earlier this month. The butchered body parts were found in a well in the Chikodi taluk of the district.

Two people have been arrested for the crime, which the police suspected was related to a financial dispute.

Addressing the people gathered at Jantar Mantar, Jain monk Charukirti Swami of Karnataka said that their protest was not against any political party and that they wanted the parties to come together and help them achieve justice in this issue.

Another protester, Jinendra Kumar Jain, claimed that there was no help from the Karnataka Congress government. We are protesting the killing of Maharaj. We are here to demand justice for the entire Jain community.”

The Bharatiya Janata Rajya Sabha Anil Jain, who took part in the protest, demanded that an investigation should be conducted by CBI into the horrific murder, adding that monks and saints should be protected in the Congress-ruled state of Karnataka.

The search for missing Acharya Shri Kamakumara Nandi Maharaj in Pelagavi district ended earlier this month with the recovery of body parts from an open well in a field in Katakappavi in Ribagh taluk district.

Expressing his shock over the death, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on July 8 that he had instructed the police officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure that the culprits are punished by the court.

Siddaramaiah said tough action should be taken against the accused, even as his government ruled out a CBI investigation.

Two men – Narayana Basappa Madi and Hasan Dalaith – were arrested in the case. The police suspect that financial matters were behind the killing.

The opposition BJP has been attacking the state’s Congress government since the incident.

In a blow to the Siddaramaiah government, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar last week claimed that Karnataka had become a “safe haven” for communal elements and criminals.

Chandrasekhar also alleged that the state police only took action on the matter after repeated protests by the BJP.
