Rory McIlroy won his first PGA Tour title of the year at the Genesis Scottish Open 2023, but he hasn’t forgotten his post-match sportsmanship. The win was sweet for McIlroy, while Robert McIntyre took second place in front of his home crowd.
Heading to the 17th hole, Rory McIlroy was one shot trailing McIntyre. McIlroy needed a good performance to force a playoff, but the Northern Irish golfer memorably hit back-to-back birdies to claim a clear victory instead. Knowing how much heroism meant McIntyre, McIlroy was quick to approach him with a kind nod.
During the post-tournament interviews, Rory McIntyre approached McIntyre, hugged him and said “I’m sorry” to the Scottish golfer.
MacIntyre was touched by the gesture, and he put the Scottish Open as one of his favorite tournaments. Speaking of heroism, he said (via the Mirror):
“I’ll never forget that. I mean, that’s why I play the sport. That’s why I’m in the Scottish Open, and if not, the Scottish Open is right up there with the event I want to play for the rest of my life.”
Rory McIlroy finished with an overall score of -15, one shot clear of MacIntyre, who enjoyed his highest finish of the year in a strong wind. Scotty Scheffler, David Lingmerth and An Byung-hun finished third at the Scottish Open.
Speaking of his victory, he said:
“Yeah, just really proud of the way I hung out there. Hit some amazing shots down the stretch. I managed to finish it off with really nice strokes. I feel incredible. It’s been six long months since I won in Dubai… I hope this win breaks the seal.” For me next week too.”
McIlroy will now turn his attention to the 2023 Open, the fourth and final tournament of the year. It is scheduled to take place between July 20 and 23 at the Royal Liverpool FC in Hoylake, England.
