Domestic stocks opened slightly higher on Monday, tracking weak Asian markets, and ahead of HDFC Bank’s first-quarter results. The BSE Sensex index opened 96.35 points, or 0.15 percent, up at 66,157.25, while the broader NSE Nifty50 index rose 33.20 points, or 0.17 percent, from 19,597.70.
By 9.20 am, the major indices were flat, with the Sensex rising 15.01 points, or 0.02 per cent, at 66,075.91, while the Nifty gained 13.50 points, or 0.07 per cent, to trade at 19,578.
Adani shares jumped at the open today, with shares of Adani Enterprises up nearly 2 percent, while those of Adani Ports up 1.30 percent on the NSE.
The broad markets outperformed the major indices, with all indices trading in the green during the opening session. Nifty Smallcap 50 and Nifty Smallcap 100 jumped 0.70 percent, while Nifty Microcap 250 rose 0.84 percent, Nifty Smallcap 250 jumped 0.65 percent, and Nifty Midsmallcap 400 rose 0.46 percent. The India Fix index jumped 5.96 percent.
All sectors traded in green, except for Nifty Bank, financial services and private bank indices, which were flat in red. Nifty Media rose 1.03 percent, the pharmaceutical sector jumped 0.57 percent, metal rose 0.53 percent, Nifty FMCG stock jumped 0.51 percent, and the information technology index rose 0.46 percent.
Adani Companies, Apollo Hospitals, Adani Ports, LTIMindtree, Dr Reddy, Wipro, Britannia, Bajaj Auto and BPCL were the biggest gainers in the morning session.
On the other hand, ONGC, HDFC Bank, TCS, Bharti Airtel, Reliance, Hindalco, HDFC Life, Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Bank, SBI Life and Eicher Motors were the biggest losers.
