State Railways Police (GRP) have filed a charge sheet of more than 120 pages against a 40-year-old man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 20-year-old woman on a local moving train last month.
The accused, a 40-year-old laborer, sexually assaulted a woman in the ladies’ compartment of a local train in Mumbai while she was traveling alone in the morning hours of June 14. He was arrested nearly eight hours after the incident. .
“On Monday we filed a charge sheet of more than 120 pages against the accused within 31 days of the incident. We have collected strong evidence and reinforced it with technical evidence, which also includes CCTV footage, said Manoj Patel, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Railways. and call records of co-passengers.
According to the police, the woman, a resident of Girgaon, Mumbai, was heading towards Bellapur in Navi Mumbai where she was supposed to attend an exam.
The woman boarded the Harbor Line local train at CSMT in the morning. As soon as the train started moving, the accused entered the ladies’ compartment, which was empty at that time.
He was alleged to have sexually assaulted the woman between CSMT stations and the mosque. He got off at the mosque station when the woman raised the alarm and ran away.”
The woman approached the GRP and filed a complaint, after which the FIR was registered.
“Teams of staff of GRP, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Crime Branch and Mumbai Police launched a manhunt for the accused. Police checked CCTV footage inside and outside the mosque station. He was later identified and arrested,” the official said.
Chief Inspector Vijay Taidi of CST GRP said, “The accused has been charged under sections 376 (1), 354, 354a, 354b, 354d, 509, 323, 504 of the Indian Penal Code.”
He also said that the statements of 14 to 16 witnesses were recorded. Also, the statements of two train passengers were recorded under section 164 of the CrPC.
