Former Indian cricketer Anjum Chopra was baffled to see the team announced for the 2023 Asian Games women’s cricket event. Just like many fans, Chopra felt there were a lot of question marks over the players who were selected in the main squad as well as those who were knocked out.
She compared the Asian Games team to the team that played the T20Is in Bangladesh and highlighted how some names were substituted without even getting a chance.
In her IANS column, this is what Anjum Chopra writes about the Indian team selected for the Asian Games:
“Announcing the latest squad for the Asian Games later this year is baffling. About 6 changes from the T20I squad sent to Bangladesh. Some were exchanged without playing and why others remain a question mark. They can’t have been injured.”
Anjum Chopra also questioned the chopping and changing of new faces in the Hindi ensemble between each series. You find it baffling that if a player is deemed talented enough, that particular player doesn’t get enough time to equip and display that talent.
In this regard, she said:
“We seem to be building our team at all. Since the last decade or maybe more, that might have been the case. Without sounding like a question to the selection committee; but I just can’t seem to fathom the fact that we always want blood in fresh talent.”
“But then what happens to that talent after a series or two. What is their evaluation scale?”
Anjum Chopra also cited the example of left arm player Anjali Sarvani, who has been in and out of the team. She added:
“Age? Hope? Talent? Skill? Junior cricketer or debut (domestic/international) cricket performance? Anjali Saravani has lined up for India’s bench during the T20 World Cup in South Africa after making her home debut against Australia. She is benched till today.”
Despite winning the T20I series against Bangladesh 2-1, the Women in Blue still have plenty of questions to answer across the divisions.
