Homer homing pigeons excel at long journeys averaging around 60 mph for extended periods.

Homer’s racing pigeon, also known as the Madurai Kattu Mookan Pigeon, is a desirable and relatively recent domestic breed, specially bred to increase speed and improve the steering instinct, primarily for racing pigeons. It originated in the 19th century through the selective crossing of several other pigeon breeds, including the Dragoon, English Carrier, French Cumulet, Horseman (now extinct), and Smerle breeds.

Homer’s carrier pigeon owes its remarkable ability to direct its crawl to the Carrier breed, which enables it to find its way home even from long distances. In addition, their stamina and ability to fly tirelessly for extended periods come from the high-flying Cumulet breed. Currently, the breed is mainly used for flying purposes and is found abundantly in its native region. Over time, it also became available in other parts of the world.

Homer homing pigeons are distinguished by their moderate size and slender and elegant body shape. He has strong wing muscles and a well-developed chest. The eyes of these birds are vibrant and clear and exhibit a reddish tint. Their legs are usually red.

This pigeon is also known for its strength and high level of activity. It excels on long rides averaging around 60 mph for extended periods. In addition to flying, these birds are also shown at organized exhibitions, where the judge determines the quality of the birds. One notable event is the annual show put on by British Homing World, which donates all profits from the event to national and local charities.

Pigeon racing is often likened to a sport where there is one starting point but countless destinations. Participating birds are transported away from their lofts and then compete to return home. The duration of the flight and the distance traveled are accurately recorded and the bird that completes the race in the shortest time is declared the winner. Races typically span distances from 100 km (62 miles) to 1,000 km (620 miles), although trips of up to 1,800 km (1,100 mi) have been documented in the United States.
