Tomato prices drop: Government will sell tomatoes at Rs 80 per kg from Sunday 16 July
To the great relief of the public, the exorbitant tomato prices finally come down after government intervention. According to an official notice, the government will sell tomatoes at Rs 80 per kg from Sunday, July 15.
Sales will start at the new price in cities like Delhi, Noida, Lucknow, Kanpur and Varanasi through the National Federation of Cooperative Consumers of India (NAFED) and the National Federation of Cooperative Agricultural Marketing of India (NCCF).
After re-evaluating the situation from more than 500 additional points in the country, it was decided to sell them at a price of eighty (80) rupees per kilogram starting today, Sunday, July 16, 2023.

Sales started today at several points in Delhi, Noida, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur and I see it through NAFED and NCCF. The statement added that it will be expanded to include more cities as of tomorrow depending on the prevailing market prices in these locations.
On Saturday, Department of Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh took to Twitter and said, “Sale tomatoes at discounted prices at these locations in Delhi (on Saturday, July 15th). Noida locations are being completed. From (July 15th), sale will start. In Lucknow and Kanpur with 15 mobile vans each – from 11 am onwards.”
Why are tomato prices so high?
The retail price of tomatoes has been skyrocketing and retailing at Rs 244 per kg on Friday across major cities in the past few weeks due to lean season as well as heavy rains.
According to government data, the average retail price of tomatoes across India was Rs 116.76 per kg, while the maximum was Rs 244 per kg and the minimum was Rs 40 per kg.
In metro cities, retail tomatoes were most expensive at 178 rupees per kg in Delhi, followed by 147 rupees per kg in Mumbai, 145 rupees per kg in Kolkata, and 132 rupees per kg in Chennai on Thursday.
