Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar hailed Carlos Alcaraz as the ‘next tennis superstar’ after the 20-year-old defeated Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon 2023 Sunday.

Spain’s Alcaraz defeated Djokovic 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 on Center Court in a thrilling final that lasted four hours and 43 minutes. With this victory, the world number one also ended Djokovic’s amazing 34-match winning streak at Wimbledon.

After Alcaraz’s impressive victory, Tendulkar took to his official Twitter account to pay tribute to the talented youngster and wrote:

“What a great final to watch! Excellent tennis for these two athletes. We are witnessing the rise of the next tennis star. I will be following Carlos’ career in the next 10-12 years as I did @Rogerfederer Congratulations @carlosalcaraz! #Wimbledon.”

In an earlier tweet, the former Indian cricket captain paid tribute Djokovic For showing great mental toughness during the 2023 Wimbledon final.

he wrote:

“Mental toughness = Novak Djokovic. Even though he has issues with his body, the mind keeps pushing him forward. What a player!”

Veteran Indian tennis player Shekhar Dhawan also paid tribute to Alcaraz, describing winning a Grand Slam tournament at the age of 20 as an incredible achievement for a tennis player.

Novak Djokovic is generous in defeat, Alcaraz is a deserved winner

Speaking at the presentation ceremony after the 2023 Wimbledon final, Djokovic praised Alcaraz for his impressive final play. He also admitted that his opponent played better and deserved to win.

The Serbian legend commented:

“I thought I would have trouble with you on clay and maybe hard, not on grass! It was a great way to adapt to the surface you must have played on maybe once or twice before this year! Amazing amazing.”

The 36-year-old added:

“You never want to lose matches like this. I think when all the feelings are settled I should still be very grateful that I’ve won many tight, close matches here in the past. I’ve lost to a better player, so I have to congratulate him.”

The loss means Djokovic will have to wait for his 24th Grand Slam title, which would make him equal Margaret Court’s all-time record.
