Washington Freedom (WAF) didn’t get off to its greatest start after losing to Wayne Parnells’ Seattle Orcas by five wickets in their opening match of Major League Cricket (MLC). But on Sunday, May 16, the Fave Des Plessis defeated the Texas Super Kings (TSK) by six innings at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.

The win helped them vault Aaron Finch’s San Francisco Unicorns into third place in the points table. Their net run rate, which was earlier at -0.325, has improved to -0.014, and that should make WAF a world of good.

Matthew Short’s jab is too hot to handle for TSK in MLC 2023

After choosing to bat first, the WAF made a healthy score of 163 for the loss of five wickets in their 20 overs. Matthew Short ensured that this team scored 47 in the powerplay, despite losing the early wicket of Andres Goss. Short got his 50 off 30 balls, and went on to score 80 runs off 50 balls with the help of 10 fours and sixes.

Opus Pinar threw his bat to score 18 from 11 and pass the 160-run mark. Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee was the choice of bowlers for TSK, finishing with figures of 4-1-26-2. Mitchell Santner, Mohamed Mohsin and Dwayne Bravo took one wicket each.

In response, the Super Kings lost share at regular intervals and never posed a threat to the WAF. After Devon Conway was out bowling Marco Jansen’s golden duck, TSK found it very difficult. Pfaff du Plessis, Lahiru Melantha and David Miller all got double digits but failed to count their starts.

Dwayne Bravo played some great shots to score 76* from 39 balls with five fours and six sixes, but his batting ended in vain.

TSK vs WAF: Who won MLC 2023 Match 5 MVP?

Unsurprisingly, Matthew Short won the man of the match award. It was because of his hitting that Washington Freedom was able to set the Texas Super Kings a reasonably hard target. Short played his shots freely on a course that was not the best to bat on and he never allowed the opposing bowlers to settle into a rhythm.
