The blast occurred at Himachali Rasoi Restaurant, known for serving Himachali cuisine, located in Middle Bazaar just below Mall Road and four to six shops were damaged.
Officials said that one person was killed and 10 others injured in an explosion on Tuesday evening at a food restaurant next to the fire office on Mall Road in the heart of Shimla.
They said the blast took place at Himachali Rasoi restaurant, known for serving Himachali cuisine, located in Middle Bazaar just below Mall Road and four to six shops were damaged.
The intensity of the explosion reached the extent of shattering the windows of many nearby shops and homes, and the sound could be heard miles away. Since the site is only a few meters away from the fire station and police control room, the firefighting operation was quickly launched. Local residents said they had complained of a gas leak about 20 minutes before the explosion. They suspect that the explosion was caused by an exploding cylinder.
One person was killed in the blast. Shimla Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said ten others suffering from burns were immediately taken to the Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital (IGMCH) Shimla, two of whom were reported to be in critical condition. Shimla Deputy Commissioner Aditya Negi told PTI that the blast would be confirmed soon.
BJP spokesperson Karan Nanda, who was at the site, demanded an investigation into the incident and adequate compensation for those whose shops were damaged.
