Punjab Police claimed to have achieved great success in the anti-drug war announced by Chief Minister Bhagwant Man on July 5, 2022.
Police say they caught 16,360 drug traffickers, including 2,351 “big fish,” last year and recorded 12,218 preliminary information reports (FIRs) of which 1,458 related to the traded quantity.
Inspector General of Police Sukchin Singh Gill, addressing a press conference here Monday, said that the police teams have recovered 1,073.44 kilograms of heroin from across the state after conducting cordon and search operations in drug-infested areas besides placing Nakas on vulnerable roads across the state. In addition, the Punjab Police teams recovered 147.5 kg of heroin from the ports of Gujarat and Maharashtra, bringing the total effective recovery of heroin to 1,220.94 kg in just one year.
Apart from seizing a large amount of heroin, IGP said the police also recovered 797.14 kg of opium, 902.13 kg of ganja, 375.47 quintals of poppy seed and 65.49 of tablets/capsules/syringes/vials of opiate medicine from across the state. Police also recovered 12.33 crore drug money from the possession of drug traffickers who were arrested last year.
He said Punjab Police had also confiscated property (worth Rs. 26.72 crores) of 66 major smugglers from different districts over the past year. Barnala district leads the table with 13 properties frozen worth Rs 2.34 crore followed by Fazilka district with nine properties worth Rs 1.72 crore and Malerkotla district with six properties worth Rs 1.13 crore.
Giving a weekly update, IGP said that last week, police arrested 297 drug smugglers/suppliers after recording 205 drug tippings, including 32 dealers, and recovered 5.52kg heroin, 11.34kg opium, 4.02kg ganja, 5.22kg quintals of poppy husks, 56,107 pills/capsules/injections/vials of pharmaceutical opiates, as well as recovering Rs 4.33 lakh drug money from their possession.
He said that with 10 more criminals/fugitives in drug and crime cases arrested in the past week, the total number of arrests has reached 964 since the launch of the special campaign to arrest protection orders/fugitives on July 5, 2022.
IGP said that the official data from July 5, 2022 to July 16, 2023, reveals that Punjab Police has busted 18 terrorist units by arresting 143 terrorists/radicals after recovering 31 rifles, 209 handguns/pistols and 5 improvised tiffins. Explosive Devices (IEDs), 6.78 kg RDX and other explosives, 10 grenades, 1 sleeve for a rocket launcher, 51 drones, and a loaded rocket-propelled grenade.
Similarly, since its formation on April 6, 2022, the Anti-Gang Task Force (AGTF) has successfully breached 208 gang/criminal units after capturing 688 gang members/criminals and neutralizing five; 667 weapons and 157 vehicles were used, Gill said. in criminal activities.
