At least six people were killed and five others injured when a container truck carrying onions collided with a taxi on the Mumbai-Nashik highway near Badga on Tuesday morning.
Police stated that the accident occurred at around 7 am, after which the container driver, 35-year-old Shivshankar Prajapati, was arrested.
The deceased are Chitali Sushant Pimple (27), Santosh Anant Jadhav (50), Riya Pardeshi (19), Vasant Dharma Jadhav (50), Vikas Shinde (46) and Prajwal Virk (27) – all residents of Badga. They take taxi to Khadavli railway station.
Police Inspector Sanjay Sable of Badga Police Station said the container was transporting onions from Nashik to Nhava Shiva in Navi Mumbai. “The driver was speeding and lost control, and crashed into the taxi,” he said.
There were 11 passengers in the taxi at the time. “The taxi driver took a sudden turn towards Khadavli station without noticing the approaching container,” said one of the officers, adding, “Due to the high speed, the container driver could not stop and collided head-on, pulling the taxi for some distance.”
After they were alerted, police teams rushed to the scene and transferred the injured to nearby hospitals, where six were declared dead upon their arrival. The other five are recovering at KEM and other hospitals.
Prajapati is arrested for rash and negligent driving which leads to death. Further investigation is underway.
