Due to the continuous rains, the water level has risen in all the rivers in the state, including the Ganges and Yamuna
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday arrived at the government disaster control room here to assess the situation in the state amid incessant rains and directed officials to remain alert.
Many roads, including national highways, were closed due to landslides due to the continuing rains in the state.
Due to the continuous rains, the water level has risen in all the rivers in the state, including the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.
Due to the rising water level of the Alaknanda River – a tributary of the Ganga – about 3,000 cubic meters of additional water has been released from the dam of the GVK Srinagar Hydroelectric Project in Pauri district.
The state emergency operations center directed the district magistrates of Puri, Tehri, Hardwar and Dehradun to exercise caution in their districts due to the release of water. In Haridwar, Rishikesh and other places, people are urged to stay away from river banks and look out for their safety.
Many areas bordering the Ganges in Haridwar are already facing flood-like situations. The administration is on alert due to the rising water level of the Ganges River.
Speaking to reporters after leaving the disaster control room, the prime minister said that it is continuing to rain and more rain is expected, calling on officials to remain alert.
According to him, he had instructed the officials that in case of any disaster, assistance should reach the people immediately without any delay.
During heavy rain on the Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district, a stopped cadence overturned and fell under the road after falling debris from a mountain near the dam in the Maniri Bhali project. The percussion driver saved his life by jumping out of the car.
Rishikesh-Yamunotri National Highway was also closed due to landslides near Jhar Gard. Due to the closure of highways, the locals, including Chardham Yatris, have a lot of problems getting around.
Badrinath National Highway was closed at Chinka, Bagpur, Pipalkoti and Nandprayag due to debris on the roads after heavy rains in Chamoli district.
The Karnprayag-Jauljibi National Highway was also closed for several hours at Harmani and Chamoli-Kund National Highway near Chopta. Both routes were later opened.
Due to heavy rains, a cowshed in Kivar village adjacent to Narayanbagad town of Chamoli district got severely wrecked, burying four to five animals tied up inside it.
Due to the rising waters of the Muk River in Tehsil Nandanagar, some of the residential buildings in the riverside village of Saira have been threatened.
According to information from the police, the Rudraprayag-Kedarnath National Highway has been closed at five places due to landslides in Rudraprayag district. The Department of Public Works has begun work to open the road.
Police said that because heavy rains continue to fall in Rudraprayag district, rocks are falling on the road in various places like Pyeonggad, Tarsali, Vata, Banswara and Telwara.
