In a petition seeking the intervention of the Gujarat High Court over allegations of custodial violence following mob violence in Junagadh on June 16, the state said on Monday that an investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

At the latest hearing date of 28 June, the High Commissioner’s bench issued notices to the state authorities following an appeal by two CSOs – the Lok Adhikar Sangh and the Minority Coordinating Committee – to bring to light the alleged public flogging of a number of men on 16 June June after violence erupted following notices of demolition of five Islamic religious sites by the Junagadh Civic Authority.

On behalf of the state, Attorney General Mitch Amin brought before the bench of Acting Justices A.

“…and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Mangrol inquires as to which video the petitioners are relying on,” it was submitted.

Adding that the investigation “will take some time,” the court then kept the order until August 3, when the state is expected to file its response.
