Lionel Messi is set to hand over the key to Fort Lauderdale after his move to Inter Miami. The Argentina captain has completed a move to the MLS club as a free agent.
On Sunday, July 16, Messi was given a hero’s welcome by the club at the DRV PNK stadium. It is now set to be handed over by local sheriff Dean G. Trantalis Macy the key to Fort Lauderdale. He said (via Daily Mail):
“I plan to attend the first game and hopefully we will meet him. On behalf of the city, I will present him with a key to the city, to show that we have an open door and an open heart for him and his family as they build their home here in Fort Lauderdale.”
he added:
“It’s good times in world football here in South Florida.”
Meanwhile, Jorge Mas, co-owner of Inter Miami, said during Lionel Messi’s enthusiastic welcome:
“Tonight is a gift and a celebration for the city that opened its arms to my family. Tonight we do it in the rain. This is holy water! This is our moment! Our moment to change the landscape of football in this country.”
he added:
“When David (Beckham) and I first met and dreamed of what Inter Miami stood for, it started with the freedom of dreaming. And our dream was to bring not only elite players and the best players but the best player ever to wear shoes – and his name is Lionel Andres Messi.”
It will be interesting to see how the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner fares at Inter Miami.
Inter Miami recently announced Lionel Messi as their player. The move is a historic one for both MLS and US Soccer in general. While star names have previously graced the MLS, Messi is determined to take the league to a new level.
The Argentina captain spoke after being introduced as a player to the MLS club. He explained his goals and ambitions to the Miami-based team. Speaking on the go, Messi said (via Evening Standard):
“I am very excited to start this next step in my career with Inter Miami and the United States. This is an amazing opportunity and together we will continue to build this beautiful project. The idea is to work together to achieve the goals we have set, and I am very excited to start helping here in my new home.”
Lionel Messi will play alongside former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami. Meanwhile, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, the former Barcelona coach, has recently taken charge of the club.
