Schools reopened across Punjab on Monday, a week after they were ordered closed on July 10 after heavy rains and floods. However, according to data accessed from the state Ministry of Education, at least 164 schools in 12 districts remain closed due to floods, damaged infrastructure or because they have been turned into relief centers for people affected by the floods. There are approximately 19,110 government schools in Punjab including primary, middle, secondary and high schools.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Baines on Sunday ordered deputy commissioners to announce the closure of schools at their level in the flood-affected areas.
According to data compiled by the Department of Education, with 44 schools still closed, Sangrur tops the list followed by Patiala (35), Mansa (17), Kapurthala (16), Jalandhar (15), Fazilka (9) and Hoshiarpur (8). ). ), Ropar (7), Faridkot (4), Mohali (4), Ferozepur (2), and Muga (2).
No schools have been closed in the districts of Amritsar, Barnala, Bathinda, Vategarh Sahib, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Sri Muxar Sahib, SBS Nagar, Pathankot, Tarn Taran and Mallerkotla.
Meanwhile, Baines said a grant of Rs 27.77 crore was issued on Monday to repair flood-hit government schools in the state. Each school will receive an amount ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 30,000.
Bains said that Rs 20 crore has been allocated to primary schools and Rs 7.77 crore to secondary schools. With this amount, school heads and management committees will undertake maintenance, cleaning, painting and other necessary repairs in schools.
