The fourth major tournament of the year, The Open Championship 2023, is set to start at Royal Liverpool on Thursday, July 20. Ahead of the much-anticipated event, Merseyside Police have now launched an unprecedented and large-scale security effort in the aftermath. of possible protest unrest.
Police stated that security for the 151st Open will be on high alert, with plainclothes officers deployed and other measures. The security alert comes amid a threat from Just Stop Oil protesters who plan to target the high-profile event.
Protesters, who have previously targeted the World Snooker Championships, Grand National, rugby premiers final, Ashes and Wimbledon, are expected to cause unrest this weekend in Hoylake as well. According to reports, many traders have placed their bets that The Open is the next event targeted by the protests.
For starters, Just Stop Oil protesters are targeting large events to try to force the government to end licensing and production of new fossil fuels. Although there have been no warnings issued by the group yet, open attendees have been warned to prepare for strict security checks at Hoylake to avoid further activity.
Merseyside Police issue a statement on an open security alert
In a statement, Merseyside Police said, “Contingency plans are in place to allow visitors to enjoy the open race with minimal disruption.” Of note is that over 260,000 golf fans are expected to arrive in Hoylake for The 151st Open.
Speaking about the potential disturbances and security alert, Merseyside Chief Superintendent Mark Wiggins is quoted as saying:
“The public should expect to see high visibility police throughout the event as we complement and support other security agencies. There are a number of plans and processes in place to deal with any incidents that may arise and to prevent any major or ongoing disruption to spectators, local residents and businesses.
“Antisocial behavior, disorder and criminal activity will not be tolerated, and we will be strong with anyone who behaves in this way. Visitors can help the organizers by giving themselves extra time to the course, arriving on time and limiting the number of bags and other items they bring with them.” They should expect to undergo normal security checks, including bag searches.”
The police official added that the force will deploy Project Servator officers in uniform and regular clothing to avoid any disturbances during the event. Despite the warnings, R&A has not yet commented on the matter.
