Day 5 of the 2023 MLC edition saw a one-off showdown between the Texas Super Kings and MI New York. The match was played at Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Dallas on July 18.
After choosing to bat first, the Texas Super Kings put up a decent total of 154-7. They were hoping for a much stronger finish, but the last home run from Trent Bolt derailed them 10-15 runs short of the required total. However, Devon Conway played a measured innings of 74 (55) to guide his team to a defensible total.
In response, MI New York suffered an early shock due to a loss to Monak Patel during the second round of the match. Jahangir and Taylor took stock of the situation and added 43 runs for the second wicket. However, their scoring rate was not up to the mark and their required run rate continued to rise with each pass.
They also had sustained falling wickets during the middle phase of the game. The pressure eventually got to them and they lost the match by 17 runs.
After today’s game, the Texas Super Kings moved into first place and knocked Seattle out on top. They now have a healthy NRR of 1.33. MI New York is sliding down the points table and is currently ranked 5th sitting with an NRR of 1.1. The San Francisco Unicorns and Los Angeles Knight Riders remain at the bottom of the standings with NRRs of -0.325 and -4.350, respectively.
MI New York runs out of steam as they pursue a modest goal
Opting to bat first, TSK’s Pfaff lost to Rabada in the final opener, but the hosts managed a total of 46 with Devon Conway making the bulk of the scoring. Cody Shetty came up in the third and struggled to get going, was brought down twice but couldn’t capitalize after he fell to Pollard.
Conway made a 42-ball fifty partnership with Miller. Just when they were starting to up the ante, Rabada came back and fired Miller. Conway looked pretty comfortable against Rashid Khan, but it was Afghani’s wrist-wielding laugh that got the last laugh as he brushed a left-hander with a googly on his end.
Santner bowled well, scoring 27 from 13. The Super Kings scored 27 runs in two innings (18th and 19th) but Boult produced an impressive final match to be limited to 154/7.
TSK’s bowling unit they lead an extraordinary bowling effort as they defend 155 with ease. MINY let the game get away when Tallor and Janagir were at the crease. Their partnership cost Miny dearly. They consumed so many point deliveries that their required run rate creeped up exponentially.
This put pressure on others like Pooran, David and Pollard who were unable to get their team off the line. Good fielding from Faf and Miller’s deep and excellent catch allied with stellar death bowling from Sams helped TSK come home.
Daniel Sams was the pick of the bowlers who took 2/15 on an economy of 3.75 RPO. Rusty Theron and Zia-Ul-Haq went on 5.5 RPO and shared two wickets between them. Mohamed Mohsin missed a bit on the expensive side but picked up 2 wickets while Bravo picked a single wicket for Hammad. Santner was the only Texas pitcher to go scoreless.
