One of the main points of conversation this season is if Texas A&M Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher will relinquish his role in calling play. Offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino is in his first year with A&M, and it will be interesting to see if he calls the plays.
At 2023 SEC Media Days, Fisher gave a strong denial of non-denial in this case.

However, he gave more answers later during the Q&A portion of his media availability. He said that even if Petrino had the play connection capabilities, Fisher would still like to be involved on the headset every week.

Even with no commitment either way, Jimbo Fisher kind of gave the answer people expected.
What was the offense like with Jimbo Fisher being called up in 2022?
In 2022, Jimbo Fisher called plays and the offense didn’t really help. The team finished 5-7 (2-6 Southeast Conference), and the offense took a lot of the blame as it averaged 22.8 points per game. The only team in the conference with a lower point average was the Kentucky Wildcats.
The main reason was that the Aggies struggled on “down the money” converting only 36% of their attempts on third down. That’s tied with the Auburn Tigers for second place in the SEC.
Their fourth-place numbers were even worse, as the Aggies went 4-for-11 worst conference (36.4% success rate). Their four down conversions were only better than the Nebraska Cornhuskers (three) and they are tied with the New Mexico Lobos in college football.
Handing play-calling abilities to Bobby Petrino probably isn’t such a bad idea. If Jimbo Fisher wants to have a say in calling plays and situations, so be it. However, he must supervise everything for the program and trust his coordinators.
