Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron was involved in a pit road accident with Justin Haley in a Crayon 301 Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon.

William Byron started from seventh on the grid to take the green flag for his 200th Cup Series race. In the early part of the race, the #24 Chevrolet driver kept the pace of the leading Toyota cars as he moved up to take second place at the end of the first stage.

During the second stage, Byron entered the pits in the green flag period for four tires and fuel on lap 128. Coming out of his pit stall, the No. 24 Chevrolet made contact with Justin Haley’s No. 31 Chevy.

Neither car involved in the accident sustained damage as the front right No. 24 hit the rear left of the No. 31 car. Commentators were quick to point out that it was Byron’s responsibility to wait for Haley to get into the pit box before exiting his stall.

William Byron, who was running out of the top ten when the accident occurred, was not penalized for the collision on pit road. At the end of the second stage, Byron finished P13.

NASCAR recently announced Hendrick Motorsports legends Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knauss as nominees for the 2024 Modern Era Hall of Fame class. The 7x Cup Series champion and his crew chief are expected to be named over other nominations due to their accomplishments in the sport.

William Byron opened up about the lead and crew duo who are the most successful pairing of recent times. Byron has spoken of the huge impact they have had on the sport and himself, growing up watching Johnson achieve seven FA Cups.

“These guys are champions and they are, in my eyes, the greatest duo of all time.” NASCAR quotes Byron.

“I think Jimmie is the greatest driver. So I guess that’s just my point of view, I grew up watching these guys and nobody ever won five in a row like that and they changed the points system. I was reading something on Instagram that they changed the points system like four and five times. So it’s pretty amazing.” he added.

William Byron compared the iconic duo to their relationship with crew chief Rudi Vogel, as they push to get the most out of each other on the track.

“I feel like it’s obvious with Rudy (Fugle) and me too, I mean, we don’t go get beers together but we’re definitely good friends off the track. But in a competitive environment we get the most out of each other”
