The Australian seamers put up some late resistance to frustrate England on the first day of the fourth Ashes test at Old Trafford, with the tourists finishing on 299-8 on Wednesday.

With Australia leading 2-1 in the five-match series, England must win in Manchester to prevent their old foes retaining the Ashes, and with the weekend’s weather forecast still unresolved, a quick hit may be required.

As has been the case for most of the series, the momentum swung that way on Wednesday with Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh all looking for a big score before England halted their lead.

With Australia down by seven wickets an hour and a half early today, England were hoping to get some runs on the board themselves before closing, but another wicket fell to ensure the tourists got back to bat on Thursday.

Stuart Broad took two Australian wickets to move on to 600 in Test cricket, with home favorite James Anderson, on his return to the England side, leaving disappointed, like the rest of his team.
