Manchester United has announced its starting line-up for a pre-season friendly match against Lyon, which is scheduled to take place on July 19.
Among the notable names listed is freshman boy Mason Mount starting in midfield. Fans took to Twitter to respond to the lineup.
Some have complained that United have not started with Jonny Evans, who stepped down as the Red Devil earlier this week. Some fans also noted that United fielded a squad without a known striker.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka plays at right-back while Lisandro Martinez is at left-back. Raphael Varane leads the right-back side with 23-year-old Mate Kovar playing in goal. Young Alvaro Fernandez plays in the left-back position.
In midfield, the only known name is Mason Mount. He is expected to play alongside 18-year-old Kobe Maeno.
United used their four-man winger/attacking midfield in the remaining slots. Anthony, Jadon Sancho, Amad Diallo and Hannibal Mejbri are all set to play up front for the Red Devils.
Lacking options initially, fans lamented that United still needed a striker too. Here are some of the best reactions on Twitter:
Manchester United have made some great moves this summer. They signed Mason Mount from Chelsea for a fee of £60m (including add-ons).
The Red Devils have also extended the contract of Marcus Rashford, who is now expected to remain at the club until 2028. They have officially parted ways with David De Gea, who was shaky despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove last season, when building from behind. United are said to be close to closing a deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Manchester United need a new striker
The Red Devils parted ways with Cristiano Ronaldo last December. leaving them with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as the remaining options to play up front.
The club was loaned out to Wout Weghorst for the remainder of the season, and the player has now returned to his parent club. Erik ten Hag will need a new striker in the new season.
Martial is injury prone and lacks the quality to lead a team of the magnitude of Manchester United. Meanwhile, Rashford is at his best when called upon to operate from the left wing.
The Red Devils have been linked with various names such as Lautaro Martinez, Dusan Vlahovic and Harry Kane throughout the summer, but the deal is yet to be finalized.
