Beren Singh and Smriti Irani’s reactions came after tensions escalated in the hills of Manipur over a May 4 video clip on Wednesday afternoon showing two women from one warring community being “showed off” by a few men from the other side.

The Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, on Wednesday responded to a May 4 video of two women “parading naked” on a road after a group of men were allegedly given the death penalty.

Talking to CNN News 18He said, “It is a crime against humanity, and if proven true, the state government will leave no stone unturned to catch the perpetrators and inflict the death penalty on them. It is a heinous crime and I strongly condemn it.”

According to the Indigenous Chiefs’ Forum (ITLF), the incident occurred on May 4 in Kangbokbe district, a day after ethnic clashes broke out in the state between the Mitte and Koki communities.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani also condemned the incident, describing it as “totally inhumane”. The investigation is currently underway and I confirmed that it will spare no effort to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The reactions of Perin Singh and Irani came after tensions escalated in the hills of Manipur over a May 4 video clip that appeared on Wednesday that allegedly shows two women from one warring community being “naked” by a few men from the other side.

Officials in Imphal said the video was making the rounds on the eve of a planned protest rally announced by the International Transport Workers’ Federation on Thursday to highlight their plight.

news agency PTI Police quoted the police as saying that a case of kidnapping, gang rape and murder was registered at Nongbuk Sikmai Police Station in Thoubal district against unidentified gunmen.

They said in a statement that there are ongoing comprehensive efforts to catch the perpetrators as soon as possible.

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic clashes since May 3 between the vast majority of the Meiteis, who are stationed in the Imphal Valley, and the Kukis, who occupy the hills. More than 160 people have been killed in the violence so far.
