The scammers conned a 39-year-old female doctor out of Rs 14.97 lakh under the pretense of submitting her study materials and ‘generally expected questions’ for the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP) exam held in England.
The victim’s doctor filed an FIR in the case at Wannafdi Police Station on Monday.
According to the complaint, the doctor said she has a MBBS degree and is working with a prominent hospital in Pune. She said that she managed to pass the first part of her MRCP exams, but failed to crack the second part. While searching for study materials for the MRCP exams last year, I came across an FB group called Only MRCP MCQ, she said.
Here I contacted a FB user who claimed to have passed the MRCP exams.
Through this FB user, the complainant contacted another person who claimed to be the head of the MRCP exam database. This person demanded money from the complainant based on assurances of submission of her study materials as well as expected questions for the MRCP examination.
Police said that between November 14 and 18, 2022, the complainant transferred Rs 14.97 lakh to this bank account in multiple online transactions. A few days later, the complainant received a call via WhatsApp from a man claiming to be a “client” of the “Investigation Department” who blamed her for trying to wrongly manipulate the MRCP exam data.
He said he would not sue if I paid £5,000. Finding her suspicious, she filed a complaint at the Electronic Police Station in Pune. FIR has been submitted. The police booked the people using the Facebook (FB) account, mobile phones and the bank account used in the crime.
