As the Yamuna waters recede, some people are slowly heading home and some are finding their way again to assess the damage to their homes and properties.

The water has not completely receded yet, and many huts are still underwater.

Anand Shah, 29, a second-generation farmer from Yamuna Khadr, said it would take at least two to three months for the waters to fully recede. We won’t be back on the banks for some time after the water recedes. “We think the river will swell again in August,” Shah said.

At some higher ground near the Mayur Vihar relief camp, people have gone home to assess the damage. Beds, mattresses, pillboxes, and furniture lay out in the street soaked in the midday sun while people laid out their belongings in the middle of the road to dry. “I still can’t go home,” said Sunita, 32, as she cleared the mud from her house. The whole house is covered in silt and mud. “It would take a few days for it to dry if it didn’t rain,” she said.

Some residents also fear they will not be allowed to return. “I was born and raised here, and I went to a school nearby. How can they ask us to leave and go back to our villages? We have lived our whole lives here,” said Govind, 22, an air-conditioning repairman.

Anand Shah, 29, agreed, “I heard announcements last week that we would not be allowed to go home.”

However, some said that this panic grips the population every year. “It happens every year – floods come and people panic that they are not allowed to go back, but people still go home,” said Pablo, 28, an IT company employee.

Eastern District Executive Judge Vinod Kumar said, “It depends on the DDA to take action. They have cleared the entire DND district from encroachments. Even the Gandhi Nagar district has been cleared.”

On the other hand, Delhi Revenue Minister Atishi issued a notice to the Divisional Commissioner to be on alert against water and vector-borne diseases in all flood-affected areas.

In the Mayur Vihar Relief Camp and its vicinity, the District Magistrate’s Office (East) is ensuring regular fumigation and disinfection to prevent the spread of diseases.
