The Ford Kansas City assembly plant in Claycomo, Missouri, was evacuated Tuesday night after a report of a possible active shooter in the building, the county sheriff’s office and plant union said.
There were no reports of deaths, injuries or damages. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office warned that it was likely a “disturbance call,” and that its response team was entering the plant to determine the source of the threat.
People making a prank call attempt to trick emergency services into sending police, usually a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, to respond to a false emergency.
The mayor’s office said a man called Ford’s safety and risk management team at about 5.20pm local time and claimed he was armed with explosives, a shotgun and a handgun, adding that he claimed he was trapped in a second-floor bathroom in the paint area of the factory. Al-Sharif added that Ford had halted all production, including the night shift on Tuesday, and evacuated the plant.
The Kansas City assembly plant employs about 7,250 workers, according to Ford’s website.
The union, the United Auto Workers (UAW), said it is closely monitoring the potential active shooting situation.
“We understand that one heavily armed individual was inside the assembly plant, but swift action by the union and the factory leadership cleared the building,” the union said in its statement.
There is now a significant law enforcement presence at the facility, the statement said, adding that there were no reports of workers being harmed.
Ford did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
