A court in Thane district of Maharashtra has sentenced a 28-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing a married woman in 2017 because she rejected his love proposal.

Chief District Magistrate Abhay G. Mantri, in the order issued on Tuesday, also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the accused, Atul Kamlesh Singh, otherwise he will have to undergo another six months of imprisonment.

The court ordered that the fine be paid to the victim’s husband.

Additional Public Prosecutor Anil Ladhungari told the court that the accused, who is not married, and the 32-year-old married victim, reside in the same area in Diva Thane district.

It was a one-sided love affair because the woman rejected the accuser’s proposal.

After the harassment, the victim’s family moved to another apartment in the same area.

The accused did not like the victim to talk to anyone.

On April 24, 2017, the accused went to the victim’s home when her husband was not around and had a fight with her. The prosecution said he later slaughtered her with a blade and also attacked her with a knife.

Some neighbors heard the woman scream and rushed to help her, but the door was locked from the inside, after which her husband was alerted. The woman was later found dead in a pool of blood in the home.

In his order, the judge said that the prosecution had successfully proven all the charges against him beyond reasonable doubt for which he should be found guilty and sentenced.
