The new plan
After the meeting on Tuesday, the distance and routes to be covered by the two-stage metro network have been significantly modified. In the first phase, which will be developed between 2027 and 2037, the metro is proposed on three routes – Paroul, Sarangpur, ISBT Panchkula to Panchkula Extension (30 km), Rock Garden to ISBT Zirakpur via Industrial Area and Chandigarh Airport (34 km); and from the grain market chowk, sector 39, to transport chowk, sector 26 (13 km).
In the second phase, which will start after 2037, the metro line will be constructed from Chowk Airport to Manakpur Kallar (5 km) and ISBT Zirakpur to Pinjore (20 km).
The three main ways
The metro will operate mainly on three main tracks in the first phase. One of the main routes, as per the approved plan, is a 30 kilometer stretch from Parul, New Chandigarh to Panchkula Extension. The plan states that the metro will touch Paroul, New Chandigarh via Kurali-Chandigarh road to Sarangpur and will cover Khuda Lahora, PGI, Punjab University and then enter Madhya Marg towards Transport Light, Sector 26 to Chandigarh Railway Station.
The road will then turn on Mauli Jagran Road to Chowk Housing Board and enter Panchkula and head towards Geeta Chowk (which is the Sector 6 roundabout). It then passes through Panchkula Bus Stand and heads straight to Maheshpur to Amartex Road towards Sector 20 Panchkula, before entering the Panchkula Extension (Madanpur).
The second major route to be covered in the first phase will be from Rock Garden to ISBT Zirakpur via ISBT Mohali and Chandigarh Airport. This metro route will start from near the Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake, before moving towards ISBT Sector 17 Chandigarh and then to ISBT Sector 43 to Fountain Chowk. Then the path continues through the Himalaya Marg and enters Mohali, while it touches Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan and continues further towards Jail Road Chowk to Airport chowk and the Aerocity Road NH-7 junction. This route will aim to touch two main points – ISBT Mohali sector 87 and ISBT Zirakpur – and will be 34 kilometers long.
The third route in the first phase will cover the grain market from Chowk to the light transport sector/timber market 26 and will be about 13 kilometres. This route will start from Grain Market Chowk and head towards Vikas Marg and head further towards Tribune Chowk before finally culminating at Transport Light/Timber Market in Sector 26.
