The Kolkata High Court on Tuesday directed the Director-General of West Bengal Police to investigate allegations of mass polling at a booth in New Town district of North Parganas district 24 on the day of the July 8 panchayat elections despite boycotts of voting by locals. there.

Expressing amazement at the allegations that despite the boycott of the vote, 95 per cent of the polls were registered, Justice Amrita Sinha reportedly questioned the reason for the high voter turnout and called out the BDO for Rajarghat, who was the local poll return officer.

Justice Sinha was hearing a lawsuit filed by voters and opposition candidates for Gyangra Hatiara Village II alleging that there was a call for a boycott of voting during rural elections as the venue remained despite being under the Kolkata New City Development District (NKDA). Part of the village panchayat.

The petitioners claimed that no one could cast ballots in the district because of the boycott call, but at the time the results were announced, it was found that people had voted in large numbers. They asserted that voting in large numbers was not possible because people were not allowed to leave their homes on the polling date. It was further alleged that although a complaint was lodged with the concerned police station, he received no response from the authorities.

Justice Sinha directed the PSD to conduct an investigation to ascertain the petitioners’ claim and submit a report to the court on August 3, the next date for the hearing.

The court said it would be open to the DGP to employ a responsible officer to conduct the investigation, but that the report would have to be submitted by the DGP. The returning officer from Rajarat block was also instructed to file a report in the form of an affidavit by handling the petitioners’ allegation.
