London: Popularity of Rishi Sunak The rating has fallen to its lowest since he became UK prime minister in October, highlighting the mounting challenge he faces in leading his party to victory in the next general election.
About 65% of Britons now have an unfavorable view of the prime minister compared to 25% who view him favourably, according to a YouGov poll of 2,151 British adults published on Wednesday. That gives Sunak a net preference rating of 40% — about six points lower than in June, according to the polling firm.
With a general election likely next year, Sunak’s record low rating underscores his struggles to restore his conservative party’s standing with the British public. The government is struggling to rein in inflation that has reached more than four times the official target for months, plunging millions of ordinary Britons into a cost-of-living crisis that shows little sign of abating.
To make matters worse, the Conservatives are fighting to keep three seats in a special election on Thursday after former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his ally Nigel Adams and third MP David Warburton quit the House of Commons after more than a year. He has been removed from the Conservative Party over allegations of misconduct, which he denies.
Despite winning large majorities in two of those three seats in the last election in 2019, the Conservative Party has played down expectations of retaining them. The bookies’ odds also suggest that the Tories are on course to lose all three.
All of this is depressing for the ruling party as it heads into a six-week parliamentary recess this week. The Conservatives have trailed the opposition Labor Party by a double lead in the polls for months, and Sunak must call a national vote by January 2025 at the latest.
One positive for Sunak from the latest YouGov poll is that Labor leader Keir Starmer’s rating has also fallen: to -22 from -14 a month ago. The prime minister’s lackluster rating also outpace his party’s, with the Conservatives posting a net rating of 54 last week.
