A gas cutter was used to break open the cash dispenser at the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) booth of a Public Sector Bank situated in Raviwar Peth area in the heart of the city and money in excess of Rs 13 lakh was stolen by unknown men.
The police investigation revealed that while the security camera and alarm system were not working, there was no security guard at the booth.
Officers from Farshana Police Station said the break-in took place sometime between July 10 and July 15 when the kiosk was not working because the modem system had some technical glitches. The last cash deposit was made into the machine sometime before July 10th.
A police officer said that on the morning of July 15, when some officials from the bank went to the automated teller booth, they found that the cash machine had been cut off on one side by a gas cutter.
A small gas cylinder, a gas cutter, metal rods and pipes, suspected of being used in theft, were left by the thieves at the kiosk. Senior Inspector Dadashib Chodappa, in charge of the police station, said, “After the break-in came to light, the bank officials were contacted. The thieves took 2,668 500-denomination notes and one 200-rupee note, for a total of 13,34,200 rupees.”
“The kiosk’s closed-circuit television cameras and alarm system were down for a long time. There was no guard. We will speak to the bank officials as well as those at the private company whose kiosk operations are outsourced.
