Minutes after the Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) replaced Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge with Shankar Jagtap as the head of the Pimpri-Chinchwad unit, the party saw open revolt with one of its loyalists, Amol Thorat, opposing the appointment, saying it smacked of “dynasty politics”, directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi frequent criticism.

Shankar Jagtap is appointed as the President of Pimpri Chinchwad today. The appointment shows that the party favored the Jagtap family. It reflects “parivarvad”. Thorat, the secretary of the party’s local unit organization, said that the party will appoint those who joined the organization a year ago, as this is considered unfair to those who have worked in the party for years and were loyal to the party.

The younger brother of the late Chinchwad MLA Laxman Jagtap, Shankar’s name was announced by State President BJP Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Shankar was the campaign manager for all the elections his elder brother contested, and chose to remain on the sidelines as Laxman made a mark for himself in the political field. He also played a major role in the victory of his sister Ashwini Jagtap during the side-round to the Chinchwad Assembly seat in March, necessitated by the death of Laxman.

In a note he sent to the BJP leadership, he reminded the party’s outbursts of Prime Minister Modi’s criticism of the dynasty’s policies. The prime minister has always opposed the ruling family policy practiced by political parties. Avoid BJP while pronouncing words like party with the difference of giving more than one post in a particular family. Despite this, the Jagtap family holds more importance.”

The prime minister emphasizes democracy by the people, by the people, by the people. However, the BJP ignored the PM’s message. They have sent the BJP’s values, policies and principles to get rid of them. Party loyalists are stunned by this decision. He said that those who fought for the party’s growth and existence were marginalized.

BJP district leader Raju Dorji said he had also expressed the need for a new Phimbri Chinchwad unit instead of giving the position to the same family. But this was my suggestion before setting the new date. Now, I have nothing against the party’s decision. He added that the party took (into account) the viewpoint of a large number of workers and leaders before making the decision.

Asked about the opposition to his appointment, Shankar said, “I have no idea about it, but during my tenure, I will work on increasing the base of the party and its general growth. I will take everyone with me.”
