The project deadline has been pushed back to March 2024 from 2022-23, according to a senior official at the Ministry of Railways.

The 285-kilometre project with 27 stations, passing through Yavatmal, Washim and Hingoli, was approved in 2008. It was proposed with the aim of providing improved connectivity to areas that are underdeveloped and prone to farmer suicides to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. these areas.

Ministry data seen by News18 shows that only 47% of physical progress has been achieved on the project, including the completion of some 35 major bridges. The tender for electrification of the road is also underway.

According to the official, although it was announced in 2008, the project could not be expedited for a number of reasons, including slow land acquisition and insufficient funds.

“About 90% of the land acquisition is complete and an additional 10% – about 230 hectares – is remaining. The 40 km stretch of Wardha-Dioli-Pedi-Calamb area is almost complete. Also, this month, we finished the modification of the Wardha station,” said the official, who He asked not to be named.

“The total land required for the project is about 2,140 hectares,” the official added.

In 2016, while pleading for special status, Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis wrote to the then Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu, saying that if the slow pace of land acquisition continues, the cost of the project will increase diversified, thus delaying the construction of the railway. The new line, which is the lifeblood of the completely underdeveloped area.

The initial cost of the project was Rs. 3,168 crore, which has increased to around Rs. 3,445 crore. So far, about 48% of the total cost – Rs 1,666 crore – has been spent.

The action is divided into two parts – Warda to Yavatmal (78 km) and Yavatmal to Nanded (206 km).

The Wardha to Yavatmal section is authorized to share costs in the ratio of 60:40 between the Railways and the Government of Maharashtra. It is carried out by the Central Railway. The second part was shifted from Yavatmal to Nanded to Rail Vikas Nigam in 2018.

The new broad gauge line will connect two existing railway stations – Wardha and Nanded – and will pass through Deoli, Kalamb, Yavatmal, Darwha, Digras, Pusad, Umarkhed, Hadgaon and Ardhapur. The project will contribute to the development of these underdeveloped areas of Maharashtra and may attract many companies to the area.

According to the ministry, the movement of goods on the new line will consist of cement, fertilizers, sugar and its derivatives, oilseeds, pulses, food grains and cotton. The project, with enhanced connectivity, is expected to create more job and business opportunities.
