Rajya Sabha President Jagdeep Dhankhar appointed four female deputies to the Senate Vice-Chairmen’s Committee. The members of parliament are PT Usha, Phangnon Konyak, Fauzia Khan and Sulata Deo, all of whom are first-time members of the Rajya Sabha.
A statement issued by the vice-president’s secretariat on Thursday said the aim of the move was to ensure gender equality, by ensuring 50 percent representation of women on the eight-member panel, which took effect on July 17 ahead of the Monsoon session. . Other members of the committee are Vijaisai Reddy, Ghanshyam Tiwari, L Hanumanthaya and Sukhendo Sekhar Rai.
Konyak of the BJP is the first female member of the Rajya Sabha from Nagaland.
Usha was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in July 2022. She is a member of the Defense Committee, the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Ethics Committee. Khan belongs to the National Congress Party, while Deo belongs to the Biju Janata Dal.
According to the rules of the Rajya Sabha, “The President shall, from time to time, nominate from among the members of the Council a Committee not more than six Vice-Presidents, one of whom may preside over the Council in the absence of the Chairman and the Vice-President when so requested by the Chairman, or, in his absence, by his Deputy.”
The statement said that this is the first time in the history of the Senate that female members of the Vice-Chairmen’s Committee have equal representation.
The Rajya Sabha chair has also gone “fully digital” from Thursday. The statement said that the president will use electronic tablets in matters related to the conduct of business of the council, attendance in the council, details of members speaking and other relevant information.
Later in the day, Dhankhar chaired a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (Rajya Sabha), which has members from Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Pralhad Joshi and Arjun Ram Meghwal, along with Jairam Ramesh of the Congress, Manoj Jha of the RJD and Tiruchi Siva of the DMK.
