According to the uncle, the victim told him that she had also been left to starve for the past three or four days, and was often given stale food to eat.

Relatives of a 10-year-old domestic worker, who was allegedly crushed by her employer in the southwestern city of Dwarka in Delhi, alleged that the minor was often beaten with hot iron tongs and demanded strict action against the accused. They said the girl was working to take care of the accused couple’s child but was also forced to do housework.

Police have arrested Kaushik Bagchi (36) and his wife Purnima Bagchi (33) for allegedly assaulting a minor. They said Purnima works as a pilot for a private airline while her husband works for another airline.

The victim’s family and other relatives live in JJ Colony, barely 500 meters away from the apartment where she was working as a domestic servant.

The girl had been working there for about two months, but none of her family knew she had been “abused.”

The victim’s aunt, who saw her being beaten by her employer, alleged that she was passing on the street to work on Wednesday morning when she witnessed Purnima beating the girl while she was working on the balcony.

Upon discovering this, she and others went to the couple’s house but did not come out. The relatives claimed that they did not open the door and let the child out except after provoking the quarrel.

Then the child recounted her ordeal to her relatives. “She (the victim) was shaking and crying when she came out. Her face was swollen and bruised. She told me that the woman forced her to do all the work and beat her. Whenever she made a mistake, the woman would attack her with hot tongs or a hot iron. Her hands had multiple burn wounds,” the girl’s aunt claimed.

The victim’s uncle said: We saw burn marks on her arms and other parts of her body. She also had bruises on her eyes. The girl was in a very bad mental state. She was terrified and inconsolable.”

According to the uncle, the victim had told him that she had also been left to starve for the past three or four days, and was often given stale food to eat.

“A few days ago, the girl was ironing a woman’s uniform by mistake, and it seems that she had burned her clothes. When the woman (the accused) noticed that part of her uniform was burnt, she burnt her with the same clothes iron.”

Police said the victim’s medical examination showed that the burns were old while the other injuries were recent. They added that it has not yet been confirmed whether the burns were caused by the accused during her stay with the couple. The girl’s relatives demanded that strict measures be taken against the accused couple, and said that they should be taught a lesson so that no one would dare to commit such a crime with any poor child.

They said that the girl’s parents, who came from a village in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, had gone to their place of origin due to the sudden death of a family member. The uncle said that her parents will arrive in Delhi on Thursday. “What happened with the 10-year-old girl is very unfortunate. According to the child, she was beaten by the couple during the past 15 days for not working properly.”

After the incident came to light, the couple confronted the victim’s relatives, who also manhandled them. The minor was working in the couple’s home through the victim’s relative who also worked in a relative’s home.

In an alleged video of the incident, the mob is seen attacking the accused couple. Some women were also seen slapping and shaking the hair of the accused woman, who was wearing a military uniform. Purnima is heard apologizing in the video while Kaushik is seen protecting her from the angry mob, saying she’s going to die…leave her.
