At the home of Saksham Pruthi, who was electrocuted at a gym in Rohini, his family alleged that management initially told them he had died of a heart attack. They also said that he was planning to quit the gym soon.

“The owner of the gym called us and said that Suksham had suffered a heart attack while lifting heavy weights and was taken to a nearby hospital. We were rushing there when we got another call around 7.30am saying he was in BSA Hospital,” said his cousin, Mukul Pruthi.

The family said they were going to take his body home when a witness at the gym told them that Saksham might have been electrocuted. The family then requested an autopsy which revealed that the cause of death was electrocution.

“They (the gym) should be punished for lying to us and using the old machines. We later found that two or three other men were also given electric shock while trying to help Saksham.”

The family said Saksham was a tech genius who loved programming and creating Android apps. Last year, he joined a dog grooming and product app called Sploot where he worked on app and research product development.

The family said that Suksham was very ambitious and wanted to work in multinational companies in the future. He even started a podcast on Spotify to talk about the technology. His aunt Priya said, “If we believed the gym management, we would never have found out the truth. We were all very proud of Saksham since he started working out at an early age and has been doing well for himself. He joined the gym just a couple of months ago.”

The FIR filed in the case mentions an eyewitness, Keshav Kumar, who was also exercising in the gym at the time of the accident. Speaking to The Indian Express, Keshav said, “I was training when I saw Saksham resting on the treadmill… Suddenly I fell. I went to help him and got a slight shock. We tried to give him CPR but it didn’t work. We took him to the hospital but he died…” He claimed that “the machines look faulty and old”.
