This time last year, there was great doubt surrounding Aaron Judge’s free agency future on the horizon.

Fortunately for the New York Yankees, they were able to convince the AL MVP to sign him to a nine-year, $360,000,000 contract—a deal that virtually guarantees Judge will stay put for the rest of his career.

Fast forward to the present, and the Yankees are in deep danger. The Bronx Bombers are rock bottom in the AL East, trailing the leading Tampa Bay Rays by nine games and two in the wild card race.

But their problems are not limited to the present. The Yankees haven’t looked like a World Series winning outfit in many years and there isn’t much to suggest it will change anytime soon.

Judge’s extension compares to the re-signing of Mike Trout from the Los Angeles Angels with the franchise in 2019. Trout’s decision to continue with the Angels raised many eyebrows, considering the fact that they haven’t made the postseason since 2014.

Both Trout and Judge are future, first-ballots to the Hall of Famers—two legendary careers that deserve at least one World Series title on the award list.

However, just like Trout, many believe Judge risks not winning the Holy Grail by dedicating his entire career to the Yankees organization. One of them is MLB podcaster Jared Karabis.

“At what point do we start talking about Aaron Judge the same way we talk about Mike Trout?” Carrabis tweeted. “A superstar who has willingly trapped himself inside an incompetent franchise incapable of winning anything.”

The Yankees have been sad without Aaron Judge

The Yankees continue to struggle aggressively without Aaron Judge. Since the AL MVP injury on June 3, the Yankees have a 15-21 record, scoring two or fewer runs in 14 games. In the same span, the team has compiled a . 217 batting average—a major league worst.

Fortunately for the Yankees, Judge is close to making a comeback.

“More progression to Aaron Judge who now runs the bases for the first time since his injury,” Brian Hoch wrote on Twitter.

Whether Judge’s imminent return is a matter of days or weeks remains to be seen, but it can’t come soon enough for the Yankees.
