Mumbai’s Bharatiya Janata Party chief Ashish Chillar on Thursday said it was inappropriate to deprive the sculptors making Ganesha idols with plaster of Paris of livelihood and urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation not to harass them in the name of environmental protection.

“I sincerely urge the BMC Council to cease its activity and not create obstacles in the celebration of a Hindu festival,” said the BJP, MLA at the assembly.

BMC imposed strict restrictions on idols during this year’s Ganeshotsav. She insisted that the idols of Ganesha worshiped in homes should not be more than 4 feet in height and should be made of shade clay. To ensure that directives are followed, the Civilian Authority conducts raids throughout the city.

However, Bandra West MLA said, it was right to insist that idols be made from shadow clay.

“There is no harm in insisting that idols are made in an environmentally friendly way. But blocking the business prospects of those who suddenly make Parisian idols out of plaster is not right either. The Prime Minister had himself intervened and held a meeting in this regard. Also, the sculptors have moved to court. So BMC should not initiate action when the decision in this matter is still pending,” said Schiller.

Chiller said that thousands of lives depended on the idols’ actions. “If sudden restrictions are imposed on them, the Marathi businessman will be ruined. This is the festival of the Hindus. So BMC should stop the raids and confiscation of the idols.”
