North East United snapped Spanish defender Michel Zappaco ahead of the 2023-24 season. Zappaco arrived from Spanish club Burgos, becoming the Highlanders’ fifth signing this summer.

Zappaco, originally from Burgos, started his football career with AtlĆ©tico de Madrid and was a regular with their reserve teams for over four seasons. Overall, the central defender made 63 appearances for Atletico Madrid’s reserve teams before signing for Almeria B in 2012.

The 34-year-old has played an important role in Spain’s third tier, making 77 appearances over three seasons, which eventually led to his promotion to the first team. However, his stint in the Segunda Division was short-lived, as he only made three appearances for Almeria before moving on.

After his stint with the Andalusians, Zappaco plied his trade with the likes of FC Cartegena and SD Ponferradina in the third division before moving to Burgos CF in 2020.

During his time there, he continued to excel, playing a pivotal role in guiding the team to Division Two in his debut season. Subsequently, he spent two successful years in the Segunda Division before making his way to India.

Zabacco told North East United media after completing his transfer:

ā€œI’ve heard good things about the country, the Indian Premier League, and its great players, stadiums and coaches. I’m very excited because I firmly believe in the ambitious project at NorthEast United FC, led by the new management and coaching staff. With all the elements combined, I think it’s going to be a great season for all of us. “.

NorthEast United FC struggled defensively last season, conceding the most goals in the league by a wide margin. However, with the inclusion of Zappaco, the team will witness a significant improvement in its defensive performance for the upcoming season.

North East United boss Juan Pedro Benali hails the signing of Michel Zappaco

North East United manager Juan Benali, who took over from Floyd Pinto over the summer, appears very pleased with the acquisition. He highlighted the role of Zabaco in the club, stressing that it was his exceptional mentality and leadership skills that prompted them to sign him.

“We were looking for a player with a fighting mentality, exceptional leadership skills and extensive experience,” Benali said. “Zabaco perfectly embodies these qualities, and his sense of responsibility will be invaluable. Furthermore, he will act as a mentor to our young players, sharing his knowledge and experience. That is exactly why we are included.”

As mentioned by Benali, Zabacco brings a wealth of experience and the ability to act as a captain in the club. He also served as captain of the Almeria B team and was praised for his physical abilities and solid defence.

Furthermore, being a left-footed player, Zabaco offers North East United a unique style of building from behind, due to his ability on the ball. This signing seems to be a perfect fit for both club and player ahead of the new campaign.
