Meals were divided into two categories. The first one includes seven ‘poor’ with dry and pickled ‘aaloo’ at 20 rupees. The second type meal costs 50 rupees and offers the passengers something from a variety of south Indian foods such as rice, rajma, chole, khichdi kulche, patore, pau bhaji and masala dosa.

Officials said Wednesday that the railways have decided to offer specially designed affordable meals and bottled water to public bus passengers to make their travel experience better.

Counters serving these meals will be placed on platforms aligned with public coaches, according to an order from the Board of Railways.

The Railway Board has instructed the concerned officials to provide economical meals and affordable bottled drinking water to be served through counters placed on the platform near the GS buses.

GS Trainers stands for General Sit Up Trainer. He is a second rate coach without reservation.

Every train including postal/express trains usually has at least two GS coaches, one near the locomotive and one at the end of the train. Anyone with a general/non-reserved ticket purchased at the counter can travel in those booths. Meals will be provided from the kitchen units (Refreshment Rooms – RRs and Jan Ahaars – JAs) of the IRCTC “on request”.

She said that the locations of these counters are determined by the railway regions so that these counters are in line with the locations of the GS buses on the platforms.

The extended service counters have been made available on the platforms on a six-month trial basis.

As of now, the ruling has been implemented at 51 stations and will be available at 13 more from Thursday. Officials said that efforts are being made to provide 200ml cups of drinking water at these counters.

Officials said this was started for the convenience of passengers especially on these often crowded buses.
